One of the things I've found so challenging about getting involved is knowing WHEN and WHERE things are happening...in 'regular' terms. So one of the things you can look forward to from this blog, and me, is just that. I'll keep you apprised of the goings on related to the School Committee that I think are noteworthy. This Monday, June 3rd, there are two meetings. First, at 6 pm there is a budget meeting at City Hall in room 207. In this meeting the School Committee will be continuing its review of the budget that they will be approving and sending on to the City Council.
Usually, these meetings focus on particular areas of the budget (e.g., 2 weeks ago the the high school section of the budget was discussed). It can be hard to follow at times, but the conversation is enlightening and the nuggets you learn are very informative. For example, did you know that graduation this year will feature translation into several different languages? What an amazing addition to the excitement! Committee of the Whole meetings are not usually televised, so if you only have 1 hour to spare on Monday and want to make it count, this is the hour to spend!
Also on Monday at 7 pm at City Hall (Council Chambers) will be a regular School Committee meeting. In addition to the normal discussion of bills paid, minutes of subcommittees, field trip approvals, and awards to accept, the Special Education Parent Advisory Council will present its annual update. The School Committee will vote on a recommendation to appoint a new Assistant Superintendent. There will be reports from the administration regarding K-12 assessments and professional development as well. I'll be attending these meetings and will post updates to this blog.
If you can't attend, you can watch online on Facebook Live on the Medford Community Media page. When I want to watch after the meeting is over, I also do that online at https://medford.vod.castus.tv/vod. It is also available live via Comcast 22 and Verizon 43 for cable subscribers.
I'll post an update for you after the meetings regarding my thoughts, and I'd love to hear from you on yours!
